A MOULDED COBALT-BLUE EWER
This jug is part of a group characterised by monochromatic glaze and moulded decoration; the preferred colours for mono-chromo moulded wares seemed to have been turquoise, cobalt-blue and white and the decoration was often influenced by contemporaneous metalwork.
The body of the jug is divided into two clear sections: the central part which bears plain vertical grooves, the shoulder is decorated with animals against interlacing leaves, hexagonal sections which are constructed with two intertwining bands filled with palmettes. These motifs recall contemporaneous metal wares and were probably directly influenced by the contemporaneous metalwork production.
A blue bottle contemporaneous to this jug and comparable for moulded decoration is now in the Sarikhani Collection. Two turquoise moulded jugs, with the neck decorated with roundels close to this one, are in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection and the David Collection. a moulded turquoise jug with a body decorated with grooves is in the Michail Collection5.
